There are working seasonal mechanics, such as temperature changes as the seasons pass (the colors of grass and leaves on trees changes based on the season and snow dynamically accumulates in winter as well). You can roast meat over a fire or eat raw fruits and veggies for basic nutrition, but once you have a pot you can use the advanced cooking system to combine ingredients to make stews, soups, and other foods that have boosted nutrition values so your food resources stretch much further when using the advanced cooking system. However, there are stackable food preservation mechanics (certain containers extend the spoil time, you can build cellars that also extend spoil time, ambient temperature also has an affect on spoil time, and all these stack together). Food has a spoil timer that actually makes sense (raw meat spoils fairly quickly but grains and similar foods last much longer). The food and cooking system are awesome as well. The enemies in Vintage Story also are very dangerous (wolves can kill you in about 2 hits or so unarmored) so crafting armor is a very important part of the game if you want to reliably survive encounters with hostile creatures. Once you get established, you can go on up through different tiers of armor types (Leather, Lamellar, Chainmail, and finally Plate armor). The armor system is actually pretty complex, there is a primitive but fragile armor you can make as soon as you get into the game. There is a realistic leather working system where you have to take an animal hide through multiple stages of preparation using Barrel crafting mechanics. The harder metals (currently only Iron but steel is coming sometime soon) you have to cook in a bloomery and then shape into ingots on the anvil. To smith something from an ingot you have to heat the ingot up in a forge and then you actually beat it into shape on an anvil. You actually have to melt down the early metals and pour them into molds to make ingots or tool parts. The smithing system in particular is a work of art in my opinion. In my opinion it is very much worth the cost currently. Actually, the game is based off of a mod called VintageCraft based on comments from the developers.
